Methoni – places worth to visit «ANEMOTIDI»

In the shade of an old platanus, we can find very deep well built with the limestone. It is unknown when it was built, but the construction itself is very old. The pours monolith placed in mouth of the well has patterns and ribbons and unreadable inscription «ANEMOTIDI» . The Swedish archaeologist Mattias Natan Valmin (1930)* considers this to be the altar of the temple of Athena Anemotidas.
Pausanias in his «Description of Greece» (Messiniaka IV), mentions the existence of the Temple of Athena Anemotidas and the Sanctuary of Artemis, with Diomedes (a clerk of the twelve gods worship – Dodekatheism), who also give the name to the goddess, because of stormy winds that sweep the Methoni area (ΑΝΕΜΟΣ gr. – wind) . In fact, the traveller reports, that after the assignment of the statue Anemotidas, the stormy winds cut off permanently.
